Helping Peepers

Organized by The Australian Cattle Dog Rescue Association

Peepers had her surgery!
Yesterday, I drove Peepers from the Catskills to Washington NJ to have my friend, and terrific Veterinarian, Dr. Mary Stankovics do the surgeries on Peepers.

6 Mammary tumors were removed, 4 individual tumors on each gland running down the left side of her body, and 2 tumors in the lower mammary gland down her right side. We're waiting for the pathology reports, pleeeease cross your fingers that she's OK.

Interestingly enough, there was a 1 1/2 inch "balloon-like" object filled with a jelly-like substance in her uterine horn. Perhaps a retained fetus? Dr. Mary does work with someone at Cornell in the repro department, and has sent pictures out for a consult about this (no charge to us.) Peepers hips and knees were also x-rayed. It appears that Peepers may have had knee surgery in her past (I KNEW that someone loved her once, enough to take care of her - she is suuuuuch a nice dog!) Dr. Mary is sending the x-rays to the surgeon she works with, to get her opinion. I am hoping the it was the tissue in her uterine horn that cause the extreme pain in the lower half of her body. Again - please keep fingers crossed!!

Peepers has an incision running down the entire length of her body. She's up and about, and her usual lovey dovey self.

Thanks for listening! Let the healing begin!

Peepers looks like a different dog!
After a couple of weeks of love, care, exercise, good food and attention - I am happy to report that Peepers, literally, looks like a different dog!

Instead of the dog who laid down next to my foot, and pressed hard against it when she slept (which was most of the time), she is running around with a smile on her face. She has not only gotten sweeter, but now has a sparkle in her eye. She loves to go swimming with my other dogs, but calms down instantly in our home. She is very responsive to what we ask of her, and fits in well. Someone (besides us) is really going to love this dog, once she joins their family.

Peepers will be available for adoption in a few weeks. First, we plan to get all her medical procedures done at the end of the month. Thank you for your donation; we're 80% there!

You can keep updated on her progress and adoption availability through www.acdra.org.

- Peepers' Foster Mom
The Story of Peepers
Sweet, gentle, little Peepers was found dumped in the yard of a veterinary hospital. She was covered in swamp muck, ticks, fleas and loaded with tapeworm. It appears that she has suffered a life of extreme neglect; her 6 to 8 year old body looks much, much older. She has PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) but sees pretty well in spite of it. She walks slowly, until she sees her foster family, and then perks up. Peepers will need to spend time recuperating from multiple health issues and the neglect that she has suffered through. Did I mention that she has a bullet lodged in the soft tissue above her left shoulder?

You would think that Peepers would not like, or would even be afraid of people but actually she is quite the opposite. Since arriving at her foster home, she has never met a person or animal she did not like. A strange dog even took her bone away at the veterinary hospital - she just licked his nose. She is tender and sweet. Although a couch potato at home, we discovered Peepers swims like a little froggie in the water!

Peepers is going to require medical care as soon as possible. She has mammary tumors that need to be removed and biopsied, and we need to x-ray her back and knees, as well as spay her but first she needs to get a little healthier. She really deserves to get back some of the love she so easily gives.
